I’m digging through the archives to bring you a very insightful post. Today’s advice is fabulous for cleaning up after Christmas or New Years!!!! Let’s begin….

When Bobby and I were younger, we could stay up until 4am to whip our home into tip-top shape after a night of drinking. But those times are over! When our parties end late in the evening, we put away essentials, do the dishes, and go to bed as soon as everyone is gone. It’s a lot easier to wake up in the morning, grab a big cup of coffee, and share and rule!

Here’s what we’re doing now. It really is a lot smarter!

LET EVERYONE HELP

The number one rule to quickly get your home back in order after a big party, family reunion, vacation or large group of people is… IF SOMEONE ASK FOR HELP, LET THEM! I’m not sure why a hostess would turn down an extra pair of hands. Make tidying up a party of its own. Dance, sip a libation and everyone will want to join in!

Can a helpful guest go from room to room and pick up used glasses, plates and napkins? Can they help put food away after a big meal? Can they put chairs back under the correct tables? This is so important! Especially if you are hosting a family reunion. The more informally and better you know your guests, the more you can ask of them when they offer!

Don’t be afraid. People ask because they want to help!

I do not ask a guest to do the dishes or put dishes in the dishwasher. But if they want to help get dishes from the table after dinner, I ask them to stack them next to the sink.

Most guests are so willing to help and enjoy the camaraderie of a little tidying up together!

If your gathering includes your yard for games like ours does, enlist the kids in the group to help clean up the Bocce Balls or find and collect the Whiffle Balls, Bats and Bases!

Remember that people you invite into your home are your guests. Let those who ask do something, but don’t put them to work until it’s done!

Here’s a great idea that I often use for large parties. I’m hiring a couple of responsible teenagers to help me keep things clean. It’s a win/win!

My mom comes and helps when I have a party. She is a great help and loves to be involved. And it’s absolutely free!

I am sure you will know what is appropriate for any large gathering.

DO NOT ACTIVATE THE PAN RULE

We just had 12 for Christmas for five days. And EVERYONE pitched in. My house looks almost as beautiful as it did back then! This works because when we are guests in their home, we do the same.

WORK ON THE INSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE FIRST

When we have large gatherings and people are scattered all over the inside and outside of my home, I ALWAYS start by getting the inside of my home back into working order and then focus on the outside.

CLEAR ALL FOOD AWAY FIRST

Do this sooner rather than later. And make sure you share the wealth. If you have a lot of leftovers, let people take some home! Keep fun Chinese food containers handy to stash leftovers in! Keep all other foods in the fridge or put them away.

If you freeze leftovers, wrap them in foil and place in a ziplock bag. And don’t forget to label the content.

GET ALL THE Crockery THAT BELONGS IN THE KITCHEN

Before I do any serious cleaning up after my guests have left, I search my home for glasses, plates, bowls, utensils, napkins, etc. and bring them to the kitchen. I ignore furniture that has been moved, chairs that are out of place and pillows that have fallen on the floor! I’m focused on one thing… getting what belongs in the kitchen in the kitchen!

SET UP ONE ROOM AT A TIME

Don’t get distracted! Work on one room at a time. Don’t clean the room (with the exception of the kitchen and bathroom), just tidy it up. Fluff up the pillows, put away the coasters and make sure everything is in place. We’ll start cleaning in a minute.

TURN ON THE KITCHEN FIRST

For me, my whole house feels messy when my kitchen isn’t clean and tidy! Take one thing at a time (did I say that before?). I start with dishes. wash the dishes! Put as many as you can in the dishwasher and wash the rest. Dry and put away dishes that have been hand washed. Don’t forget to put the dishes in the dishwasher as soon as they’re done.

Clean one countertop at a time. I start at the counter where my coffee station sits and work my way around the kitchen to clean every surface. This includes the stove and any other appliances that were used! Knobs and handles often get dirty too, so wipe them down well and quickly.

Don’t forget floors! I wipe the kitchen floor when I work in the kitchen. I don’t like crumbly or sticky kitchen floors! It’s often better when I leave the kitchen than when the guest arrives!

When all the rooms are tidy, go from room to room with a duster or feather duster. After a good dusting, run the vacuum through the party areas! Dead easy!

CLEAN UP OUTSIDE

If the party is outdoors, you should also spend a little time cleaning up outside.
