Located in the desirable Brisbane suburb of Paddington, this home is the perfect blend of classic and contemporary.

“From the front it looks like a traditional house. However, upon entering, the original house reveals a huge hallway that blends old with new,” explains Kieron.

“The idea of the long hallway connects the 4 rooms of the original worker’s house with the new part of the house.

“Rooms and spaces detach from the corridor to reveal their own identity.”

The house expansion takes modernity to a whole other level when the Birdcage feature is revealed.

“The house leaves the original workers’ house untouched at the front and thanks to the elevation of the terrain, the new rear extension is invisible from the street.

“The materials used in the extension change from a solid base of reclaimed brick and concrete to an exposed structure of hardwood framing and exposed beams.

“The upper level becomes a light volume that rises into the sky above the cottage roof. It’s almost as if the raised structure has a translucent skin protected from the sun by a wooden screen,” says Kieron.

“A screened-in outdoor patio amidst the treetops gives this home its impressive modern facade. It’s like a life size birdcage and the ultimate secluded retreat.”

The home of a young family, the Birdcage House is reserved in some areas and forgiving in others.

“The family needed a number of things that we like to call ‘spatial experiences’—places of solitude and places to gather,” says Kieron.

“A parent retreat; Space for children to play, hide and seek alone time. As architects, we tried to connect these spaces to the site in a coherent way.

“It’s quite a small but smart home. The key was to build a small footprint with a number of rooms that have all the amenities of a much larger home.

A humble home in some ways, but with enough indulgence to make the family feel they are in a truly special place.

“The unique and personal spaces, like the upstairs birdcage or the outdoor shower, add an extravagance to the home that makes it seem more substantial than it actually is.”

Such contrasts can be seen throughout the house, with some bright, light-filled rooms and dark and moody rooms.

“The client was an integral part of the project with very special requirements.

“Straight eaves, Melbourne brick, not too much wood, black or white,” says Kieron.

We have worked closely with them to build a level of trust where we have overcome all our initial prejudices to create a rich and warm home.

“The owners use every part of the house. It’s suburban but urban, which suits her personality perfectly.

“The series of small spaces allows them to function as a close-knit family, but still gives them the opportunity to find an individual retreat within the home.”
